Our Training Fleet
Boats designed for learning
Newburgh Sailing Club uses a dedicated training fleet selected specifically to help people learn safely and confidently. The boats we use are stable, predictable and forgiving, allowing sailors to focus on developing skills rather than worrying about balance or speed.
Our training boats are suitable for both children and adults and are used throughout courses, regular training sessions and supervised sailing.
All boats are checked regularly and supported by safety boat cover during organised sessions.
You do not need to own a boat to learn to sail at Newburgh — the training fleet is available for courses and club training.
Why training boats matter
Learning to sail in the right type of boat makes a huge difference.
Training dinghies are:
- stable and difficult to capsize
- easy to control at low speeds
- simple to rig and understand
- suitable for nervous beginners
- ideal for building confidence
Sailors are introduced gradually to more independence as their skills improve.
Our Training Dinghies
Beginner & Cadet Boats

Smaller single-handed dinghies are used for young sailors and beginners learning the basics of steering and sail control. These allow sailors to feel in control while still remaining safe and supported by instructors nearby.
These boats are used for:
- RYA Youth Stages 1–3
- cadet sailing sessions
- first time sailors
They are light, responsive and easy to handle.
Double-handed Training Boats

We also use larger two-person training dinghies. These are ideal for adult beginners, families and coached sessions where an instructor may initially sail alongside or provide close support.
These boats provide:
- excellent stability
- plenty of space
- a calm learning environment
They are often the first boats adults sail in.
Improver Boats

As confidence grows, sailors move into slightly more responsive boats which allow them to develop boat handling skills such as tacking, gybing and sailing independently.
These boats help sailors:
- sail without direct supervision
- develop awareness on the water
- prepare for club sailing and racing
Safety Boats
During all training sessions, qualified volunteers operate safety boats on the water. These powerboats provide supervision, assistance and reassurance to sailors and parents alike.
Safety boat crews:
- monitor all sailors
- assist with launching and recovery
- help if someone becomes tired or unsure
- support instructors during teaching
This allows beginners to relax and enjoy the experience.
After training
Many sailors continue using club boats during organised sessions after completing courses. There is no expectation to purchase a boat immediately — some members happily sail club boats for years.
When sailors do decide to buy their own boat, instructors and experienced members are always happy to offer advice.
