Our Facilities
Newburgh Sailing Club is a true waterside dinghy sailing club on the banks of the River Tay. Everything we do is centred around getting people afloat easily, safely and regularly — whether you are completely new to sailing or have been racing for years.
We are not a marina or a private boatyard. We are a hands-on community club run by volunteers, and our facilities are designed to make sailing simple and accessible.
Direct River Access & Slipway
Our slipway and shoreline give immediate access to the River Tay. Boats are launched only a short distance from the boat park, so there is no lifting or long carrying of equipment.
The sheltered water close to shore makes it ideal for:
- beginners
- junior sailors
- first capsize practice
- instructor-led training
Clubhouse & Viewing Area
The clubhouse is the social centre of the club. Parents can watch sailing from inside, members warm up after sessions, and beginners quickly get to know people.
Facilities include:
- river viewing space
- kitchen facilities
- race box
- toilets and changing areas
After sailing there is usually tea, conversation and plenty of advice available — new members are always included.
Boat Park & Rigging Areas
Members store their boats in our grass boat park directly beside the water. There is plenty of space to rig sails safely and help is always nearby.
The short distance to the slipway means sailors can:
- arrive and sail quickly
- get help launching
- supervise junior sailors easily
- take part in club racing without complicated logistics
Safety Boats and rescue cover
All organised sailing sessions are supported by powered safety boats operated by trained volunteers.
We provide:
- launch assistance
- on-water supervision
- immediate help if a sailor capsizes
- coaching support
This is why the club works so well for children and adults learning for the first time.
Training Equipment & Beginner Gear
You do not need to own a boat or equipment to start sailing.
The club provides:
- training dinghies
- buoyancy aids
- wetsuits for beginners
- instructor support
Many members learn using club boats before deciding whether they want their own.
A Family-Friendly Environment
The layout of the club allows sailing, supervision and social space all in one place. Parents can remain ashore while still watching their children on the water, and new sailors are never left to manage on their own.
The most important feature of the club is the people. Members help each other launch boats, recover boats and learn new skills. It’s normal for someone to introduce themselves and offer help within minutes of arriving.
Parking
One of the advantages of Newburgh Sailing Club is how easy it is to arrive and get afloat.
We have extensive informal parking both within the club grounds and on the pier area immediately beside the club. Even on busy sailing days there is usually plenty of space available, and members are able to park close to the sailing area.
Boats and equipment can be unloaded right beside the slipway, meaning there is no long carrying of sails, masts or kit. This makes the club particularly convenient for families, junior sailors and anyone new to sailing.
Parking is very rarely restricted, even during racing or events, and visitors are always welcome to park and come down to watch or ask about getting started.
Accessibility
Newburgh Sailing Club aims to make sailing available to everyone.
There is step-free access from the parking areas to the clubhouse and sailing area, allowing easy movement between arriving, rigging and launching. The slipway can be reached without steps and boats can be launched close to where cars are parked.
The clubhouse includes an accessible toilet and indoor seating area. From inside the clubhouse and viewing windows, sailing can be comfortably watched without needing to stand outside on the shoreline. This makes it particularly suitable for grandparents, spectators and members with limited mobility.
Our volunteers are always happy to help with launching and recovery, and new visitors are encouraged to speak to a member when they arrive — assistance is always available.
Changing Facilities
We have indoor changing facilities designed to make sailing comfortable in all weather conditions.
The clubhouse provides separate male and female changing areas, as well as an additional changing space for instructors. Sailors are able to get changed indoors after sailing sessions, which is particularly important on colder or wetter days.
Hot and cold showers are available, and there is space to hang and dry wetsuits and sailing clothing. These facilities allow sailors to warm up, change and relax after being on the water, helping make sailing enjoyable year-round.
Winter Storage
Members are able to keep their boats at the club throughout the winter months, allowing them to avoid transporting boats back and forward between home and the sailing site.
Boats are typically stored in the boat park, and an indoor storage option is also available for an additional cost (subject to availability). Members should contact the club for current arrangements and availability. As a volunteer-run club, activity continues year-round. Winter work parties and maintenance days are regularly organised, giving members an opportunity to carry out boat maintenance, help maintain the club grounds and prepare for the new sailing season.
Come and Visit
The best way to understand Newburgh Sailing Club is simply to visit on a sailing day. There is no pressure, no experience required and someone will always be happy to show you around.
You don’t need a boat — just curiosity.
